Adolescent Therapy – (Ages 16+)

Being a teen is hard. Adolescents are struggling to form their own identity, fit in socially, gain independence, and manage academic pressure. They experience physical changes, increased academic demands, social pressure, and more freedom – which means more choices.

For some adolescents, communicating about their emotional experiences can be overwhelming. My practice emphasizes the importance of recognizing that a broad range of reactions and behaviors is normal and to be expected. The therapeutic setting can offer a uniquely safe space for adolescents to express themselves, find perspective, and gain self-awareness which will enhance their relationship skills and ability to make choices about their future.

I work with adolescents in individual sessions as well as sessions which include one or both parents, depending on the situation and preferences of the family.

Young Adult Therapy

Being a young adult can be stressful. So many decisions to make. Greater responsibilities. A tight job market. Changing family relationships. The ups and downs of romantic relationships. Making the transition into adulthood can be tricky for even the most well-adjusted young person.

Young adults often find the support of a therapist to be helpful during the transition from adolescence into adulthood, especially if they experience mental health concerns or other difficulties as they become accustomed to new expectations, roles, and responsibilities. Most people struggle at least a little during their young adult years. If you’re having growing pains, you are most certainly not alone. In our counseling sessions, we can work on gaining clarity and self-awareness as you work on turning your dreams and goals into reality.

Adult Therapy

There are usually ups and downs in life or waves of more stressful times and less stressful times. Most of the time, the waves are small enough and far enough apart that you have time to recover from stressful or painful experiences. But, when the waves become too intense or too close together, it is common to feel overwhelmed, bombarded or lost.  The issues and experiences that cause emotional discomfort or unhappiness are as varied as the people who experience these things; life does not discriminate when it comes to challenges.

We all bump up against challenges from time to time. And, regardless of the thoughts, feelings and issues that are causing you uncertainty, stress or pain, therapy can provide you with the insight and tools needed to move forward into a more meaningful, productive and connected life.

Individual adult counseling is a process of self-exploration. In sessions, you will be able to talk about what is going on in your life in a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you can feel heard, understood and supported. With help, support and a willingness to self-explore, you can create the life you want to be living.

Family Therapy

Family therapy is designed to help families collaborate to address family problems. The course of treatment is often brief, and most family therapy models seek to address the communication styles of the family, as well as any individual issues that may be interfering with the cohesiveness of the family system. Family problems do not have to be severe to warrant therapy. Working with a therapist, families can expect to learn to understand one another better, communicate more effectively, and work proactively to disrupt unhealthy patterns. Family therapy can help repair and improve relationships where both internal and external stressors have led to fractures, conflict, or distress.

Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that seeks to reduce distress and conflict by improving the systems of interactions between family members. While family therapists often seek to have all family members (affected by the problem) in the room, that is not always possible or necessary. What distinguishes family therapy from individual counseling is its perspective or framework, not how many people are present at the therapy session.
