Frequently Asked Questions

Finding the right therapist for you is essential! There are many models and interventions used in therapy, however, research on therapeutic outcomes tells us that the client-therapist alliance, or relationship, is one of the strongest predictors of success in therapy.

In other words, finding a therapist that you feel you “mesh” with is one of the most important things you can do when you begin therapy. If you have a question that is not answered here, feel free to email me or bring it up during our consultation.

If you are in the beginning stages of searching for a therapist, I encourage you to view the Dripping Springs Psychotherapy Directory website, which provides a convenient listing of local therapists and counselors:  https://www.dspsychotherapy.org/directory

Spirituality/Faith-Based Counseling Available Upon Request

People come to see me for a variety of reasons. Therapy encourages personal reflection and growth, so some people start therapy to enhance their lives and continue their personal growth.  Some come in due to a recent life transition, grief or loss, others because they are experiencing anxiety or depression. Some are facing relationship challenges, individual challenges, or family challenges.

I really enjoy working with intuitives (MBTI/Jungian personality theory).

I also frequently work with people who are highly sensitive (HSP).

In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each of my client’s individual needs to help them attain their desired personal growth.

Why invest in therapy? …Because you are worth it!
Therapy is an investment in you and an important part of self-care. A successful course of therapy is much like getting a correct prescription for glasses, in that it can alter the way a person sees the world. Though the process is more involved than getting a prescription, the results can be equally dramatic. Read more…

Good Faith Estimate Notice
Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.   Healthcare providers are required to provide clients who do not have insurance or who choose not to use their insurance for therapy services with an estimate of the cost of those services.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.  You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call HHS at 1-800-958-3059.

In-person sessions at the office are offered 2pm-7pm, Wednesday-Friday.

Email is the best way to get in touch with me; I typically do not take calls between appointments but if you call and leave a voicemail I will return your call as soon as I can.

Regular counseling sessions are 45-50 minutes.

Yes, your privacy is very important to me!

The law protects the relationship between a client and a therapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission.

If someone contacts me to request information about you or our sessions together, I will not respond to them unless I have your written permission and you would like me to disclose information about our work together.

The exceptions where confidentiality may have to be broken are the following circumstances:

  • If I have reason to suspect abuse of a child, dependent adult, or elderly person, I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client expresses an intent to harm him/herself or someone else, confidentiality may have to be broken to ensure safety.
  • If you are involved in a legal process and a court of law subpoenas my clinical records, I may be forced to send them. Please note I DO NOT appear in court and highly discourage clients from choosing to subpoena me or my records

No, I do not take insurance. To protect my clients’ privacy, confidentiality, and health information, my practice is private-pay only.

I am classified as an out-of-network insurance provider.  This means that your insurance company may cover some or all of the costs of your appointments, but you will be responsible for filing the claim with your insurance company to be reimbursed for your payments.

Some health care plans offer a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Prepaid Benefits Card that you are able to use for out-of-pocket medical expenses like counseling sessions. If your plan does not offer this, you may be able to submit a claim for reimbursement (details below).

To determine if your insurance will cover your counseling:

Call your insurance company directly to ask them the following questions:

  • Does my plan cover services to out-of-network mental health providers?

  • What is the deductible I have to meet before coverage to an out-of-network provider kicks in?

  • Is there a maximum amount per session the insurance will cover for an out-of-network provider?

  • How much time do I have to file a claim for out-of-network services?

  • Do I need pre-authorization or a referral from my PCP to see a counselor?

  • What is the process to get reimbursed for out-of-network services?

Please be very clear about the last question. Each insurance company will have a slightly different process and it is vital to know what information your company will need and what form your company uses so that you can be given the proper documentation for your claim.

If your insurance does reimburse you for out-of-network counseling:

Upon request, I can provide a detailed invoice (called a “superbill”) at the end of each month. It contains all the information that most insurance companies require. Please know specifically what your insurance company will need from you so that we can be sure the superbill has the right information. Once you have your documentation, you can provide it to the insurance company so that it will reimburse you for your payments.

Know the risks before filing with your insurance company:

The unfortunate reality is that seeking mental health care through your insurance can sometimes have unplanned consequences. Most insurance companies only cover care that is “medically necessary”.

This means, that they will typically only cover counseling for issues that have a recognized mental health diagnosis attached to them.

Your diagnosis and sometimes the supporting evidence for that diagnosis becomes part of your health record. This could potentially impact other areas of your life that take your health record into account.  My practice focuses on personal growth and relationship development to enhance each client’s quality of life, rather than focusing on labeling and diagnosing clients with mental illnesses.

—> If you are eligible for out-of-network benefits through your insurance company and would like to submit superbills from our sessions for reimbursement, please discuss it with me during our consultation.

Contact me to schedule your first session
Once the first session is scheduled, I will send you the intake paperwork to fill out beforehand. Please complete this paperwork prior to your first session. If you have questions and would like to speak with me prior to your first session, I offer a free 20-minute phone consult.

First session
During this 45-50 minute initial session, we will go into detail about what you’re struggling with and what things you would like to work on first. At the end of the first session, we will discuss next steps. Usually this means setting up another session, and determining how often we will meet. If either of us thinks that I am not the right fit for you, I will happily give you referrals to other professionals who may be a better match.

Thoughts on finding a therapist and getting the most out of therapy:

Don’t wait until things are overwhelming to reach out for help. My approach emphasizes mental health and well-being and considers some difficulties and challenges a normal part of life. Therapy can provide a place to process through difficulties and work on personal growth.

Keep a list or journal handy during the week so you know which topics are important to discuss before your appointment.

Be honest and speak up if there are things that you are unsure about or you would like to clarify or discuss something further.
